Chlorine vs. bromine for hot tubs: which sanitizer to choose
The most common question from new spa owners: should I use chlorine or bromine? Both sanitize effectively. They work differently, have different maintenance requirements, and suit different types of spa use. Here's a complete comparison so you can make the right choice before you fill the tub.
How each sanitizer works
Chlorine kills pathogens through hypochlorous acid (HOCl), which penetrates and destroys microbial cell walls on contact. It works fast — within seconds to minutes — and dissipates from the water over time, meaning it won't accumulate between uses. In a spa, chlorine is commonly added as granular sodium dichlor (which also adds CYA) or as liquid sodium hypochlorite.
Bromine works through hypobromous acid (HOBr), which sanitizes more slowly but remains effective across a wider pH range. Bromine doesn't evaporate — instead, spent bromine converts to bromide ions that stay in the water permanently as a "bromide bank." When you add an oxidizer (potassium monopersulfate / MPS, or a small amount of chlorine), it converts the bromide bank back into active hypobromous acid. This cycle is what makes bromine maintenance different from chlorine maintenance.
Bromamines vs. chloramines
When chlorine reacts with contaminants, it forms chloramines — compounds that smell bad and provide essentially no sanitizing activity. When bromine reacts with contaminants, it forms bromamines, which retain roughly 10–25% of bromine's sanitizing power. This is why a bromine spa can handle higher bather loads more gracefully than a chlorine spa: the spent sanitizer is still doing some work.

When chlorine is the better choice
- Infrequent use — a spa used once or twice a week by one or two people. Chlorine dissipates between sessions, leaving the water fresher rather than carrying over active sanitizer.
- Budget-conscious maintenance — liquid chlorine is one of the least expensive sanitizers available. If cost is a factor, chlorine wins.
- You want the option to switch later — chlorine doesn't leave a permanent chemical residue. If you decide to change your approach, you can drain and refill with no complications. Starting a bromine system locks you in.
- Familiarity — if you already maintain a chlorine pool, using the same chemistry for a spa reduces learning curve and equipment.
Chlorine in a spa: watch your dichlor use
Sodium dichlor (granular chlorine sold for spas) adds both chlorine and CYA. In a 400-gallon hot tub, adding 1 tablespoon of dichlor raises CYA by roughly 3–4 ppm. Use dichlor sparingly to initially establish your FC, then switch to liquid chlorine or calcium hypochlorite for ongoing dosing. Once CYA exceeds 30 ppm in a spa, you lose significant sanitizing efficiency and will need a partial drain to dilute it.
When bromine is the better choice
- Daily or heavy use — a spa used every day, or by multiple people per session. The bromide bank means the system is always primed with a sanitizer reserve that reactivates quickly.
- High water temperature — spas running at 102–104°F break down chlorine noticeably faster. Bromine's superior heat stability means fewer emergency re-doses mid-soak.
- Sensitivity to chlorine odor — some users find chlorine's steam-phase off-gassing irritating in an enclosed spa area. Bromine stays in solution more readily.
- You want a simpler oxidizer routine — weekly MPS shock reactivates your entire bromide bank. The maintenance cycle for a bromine spa is: maintain 3–5 ppm bromine, oxidize with MPS weekly (or after heavy use). That's largely it.
Setting up a bromine system
Bromine requires an initial setup step that chlorine does not:
- Establish the bromide bank. After filling with fresh water, add sodium bromide (available as a granular additive) per the manufacturer's label. A 400-gallon spa typically needs 2–3 oz to establish an adequate bank. Sodium bromide itself is not a sanitizer — it's the reserve of bromide ions waiting to be activated.
- Activate with an oxidizer. Add MPS (non-chlorine shock) or a small amount of liquid chlorine to convert the bromide into active hypobromous acid. The water will jump to a measurable bromine reading within minutes.
- Maintain with a bromine floater or inline feeder. Bromine tablets (BCDMH — bromo-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin) in a floater slowly dissolve to maintain the bromide bank and provide active bromine. Adjust the floater's flow valve to dial in 3–5 ppm.
- Oxidize regularly. Add MPS after heavy use or weekly to reactivate bromides that have been consumed. Test before adding to confirm bromine levels before and after.
Once bromine, always bromine
Bromide ions are not removable without draining the water. If you add chlorine to a bromine spa, it will react with the bromide bank and produce hypobromous acid — not hypochlorous acid. You're effectively just using chlorine as a bromine activator. If you want to run a true chlorine-only system, you must start with fresh water. Don't switch without a full drain and refill.
Which should you choose?
For most hot tubs used several times per week by a family or household, bromine is the better system. It handles heat better, produces less irritating byproducts, is more forgiving of minor pH drift, and the oxidizer-reactivation cycle makes maintenance straightforward once established.
For a spa used occasionally — a few times a month — or if you prioritize cost and simplicity, chlorine works well. Just be disciplined about CYA management if you use dichlor, and test before each use since chlorine dissipates faster.
