Reverse osmosis vs. draining a pool: which is right for your desert pool?

The short version

Both approaches solve the same problem: too much calcium, CYA, or TDS accumulated from desert evaporation. Draining is simpler and cheaper, but you lose water and refill with hard Arizona tap water immediately. RO costs more but wastes no water and leaves your pool with near-zero hardness — a better starting point in a drought-conscious state with hard fill water.

Every desert pool owner eventually faces the same problem: after a summer of evaporation and hard-water top-offs, calcium hardness and CYA have accumulated past useful levels. The fix requires removing dissolved minerals from the pool. There are two ways to do that — and in the desert Southwest, the choice matters more than most pool guides acknowledge.

How a partial drain works

A partial drain removes a fraction of the pool water and replaces it with fresh fill water. When you drain 25% of a 15,000-gallon pool (3,750 gallons) and refill, every dissolved parameter drops by approximately 25%:

  • CYA at 90 ppm drops to about 67 ppm
  • Calcium hardness at 520 ppm drops to about 390 ppm
  • TDS, salinity, and alkalinity all drop proportionally

The pool then needs rebalancing — pH, alkalinity, and chlorine all shift with the new water — but the process is straightforward and inexpensive. Water cost for 3,750 gallons at Phoenix Water rates is roughly $30–50.

The Arizona drain problem

After a 25% drain-and-refill in Phoenix, you’ve just added 3,750 gallons of 280–320 ppm tap water to your pool. Your calcium hardness starts rising again from day one — not from zero, but from 390 ppm with a 300 ppm fill water baseline. You’re starting the next accumulation cycle already in the elevated range. A drain works, but it doesn’t buy as much time as it would in a region with soft fill water.

How pool reverse osmosis works

Pool RO uses a mobile filtration unit that connects to your pool’s circulation system. Water is drawn from the pool, passed through a semi-permeable RO membrane at high pressure, and the treated water is returned directly to the pool. The membrane rejects dissolved minerals — calcium, CYA, TDS, metals — and those concentrates are discharged separately (typically to the sanitary sewer).

No pool water is drained. The process takes several hours for a residential pool, usually running at 20–30 gallons per minute. A service provider brings the unit, sets it up, and returns when treatment is complete. The pool stays in service and doesn’t need to be partially emptied.

After RO treatment, the pool water has very low TDS and calcium hardness — similar to a newly filled pool. All chemistry is rebalanced from scratch: calcium hardness needs to be raised to the target range, alkalinity adjusted, pH set, and chlorine re-established.

When to choose a partial drain

A partial drain is the right choice when:

  • Parameters are moderately elevated. CYA in the 80–100 ppm range, calcium hardness at 450–550 ppm. A 25% drain brings both back into target without overcomplicating the process.
  • Cost is the primary concern. At $30–80 for water plus chemicals versus $400–900 for RO service, draining is dramatically cheaper when water restrictions aren’t a factor.
  • Fill water restrictions are minimal. If your municipality doesn’t restrict pool top-offs and water rates are normal, a drain-and-refill is straightforward.
  • You want a simple, fast reset. A partial drain takes a few hours of draining and refilling with garden hoses or a submersible pump, no scheduling required.

When to choose reverse osmosis

RO becomes the better choice when:

  • Water conservation matters. Arizona and Nevada have experienced significant drought pressure on Colorado River allocations. Avoiding the discharge of 3,750+ gallons of treated pool water is a real consideration. Some municipalities offer incentives for choosing RO over draining.
  • Fill water is very hard. When Phoenix or Las Vegas tap water is 300+ ppm calcium hardness, a drain-and-refill starts the next accumulation cycle already elevated. RO avoids this by treating the existing water to near-zero hardness before rebalancing.
  • TDS is very high. When TDS has accumulated to 3,000+ ppm above the fill water baseline, a 25% drain only scratches the surface. RO removes TDS far more completely.
  • The pool has never been treated. Older pools that have run for several years without any drain or RO treatment often have calcium hardness above 700 ppm and CYA above 150 ppm. RO resets this more completely than a partial drain.
  • Salt pool owners. In a salt pool, draining loses the substantial investment in pool salt. RO keeps the water and the salt, while removing calcium and CYA from the same water.

Salt pools and the RO advantage

A salt pool with 3,200 ppm salinity loses proportional salt in every partial drain. A 25% drain removes 800 ppm of salt — several hundred dollars of salt that needs to be replaced. RO treats the same water without discharging it, so the salt stays in the pool after treatment. For salt pool owners, this cost-benefit calculation often favors RO over draining for the annual reset.

The real tradeoff: starting point after treatment

The most underappreciated difference between the two approaches is where you start the next season.

After a 25% drain-and-refill in Phoenix, your pool water is a blend of 75% old pool water and 25% tap water at 280–320 ppm calcium hardness. Calcium hardness might be at 390 ppm on day one of the new season — already well into the elevated range, with a full summer of accumulation ahead.

After RO treatment, the pool water has calcium hardness near zero, which then gets raised to 250 ppm with calcium chloride addition. You start the season at 250 ppm — the bottom of the target range — and have the full buffer of 150 ppm before hitting the 400 ppm warning zone. With the same desert evaporation rate adding 7 ppm per week, you have about 21 weeks before reaching 400 ppm versus roughly 8 weeks after a drain.

That difference in runway is the core reason RO is common in Phoenix and Las Vegas despite costing significantly more.

The hybrid approach

Some situations call for combining both: a small partial drain to quickly remove a significant volume of extremely concentrated water, followed by RO to finish the treatment on the remaining water. This is typically used when:

  • TDS is so high (4,000+ ppm above fill water) that RO alone would take impractically long
  • The pool has been neglected for several years and all parameters are severely elevated simultaneously

For standard annual maintenance, one approach or the other is sufficient — the hybrid is rarely needed.

A full RO treatment will substantially reduce CYA — typically bringing a pool at 100+ ppm CYA back into the 20–50 ppm range after treatment. This is an important point: CYA can be removed by RO, not only by draining.

Three factors make RO more attractive across the desert Southwest. First, fill water is already very hard — Phoenix, Scottsdale, Palm Springs, and the Coachella Valley all draw from the Colorado River system, meaning a drain-and-refill leaves you with elevated CH on day one, while RO starts you from near zero. Second, water conservation matters in drought-affected Colorado River states; the Coachella Valley Water District and Nevada utilities have both encouraged RO as an alternative to discharging pool water. Third, RO service providers are widely available and well-established across Arizona and inland Southern California precisely because the hard-water problem is so consistent here.

Should I drain and then use RO, or just do one or the other?

For most annual maintenance situations, one approach is sufficient. A 25% partial drain handles moderately elevated readings quickly and cheaply. RO alone handles severely elevated readings without water loss. Combining both is only warranted when TDS is extremely high (4,000+ ppm above fill water) or when all parameters are severely elevated after years without treatment. For standard annual reset, choose one based on your priorities.
