Why algae keeps coming back in your pool (and how to stop it)
Algae keeps coming back when the root cause isn't fixed. The most common reasons: free chlorine regularly dips below the minimum for your CYA level, CYA has crept high enough that normal doses of chlorine can't maintain an effective concentration, or the previous treatment was stopped before the algae was completely gone. Fixing recurring algae means finding the pattern — which requires tracking readings over time.
The pattern that identifies the cause
A pool that cycles between "clear" and "green" every few weeks almost always has one of the five causes below. You can diagnose which one by looking at your reading history: when does FC drop below the CYA-based minimum? How fast does it drop? Has CYA been rising over the season? Without a log of readings, you're guessing. With a log, the answer is usually obvious.
Cause 1: FC regularly drops below the minimum for your CYA
FC drops below the algae threshold between tests
The FC/CYA relationship sets a hard minimum below which algae can establish. At CYA 50 ppm, the minimum FC is about 3.75 ppm (50 × 7.5%). If FC drops below this — even briefly, even overnight — algae spores that are always present in pool water begin to multiply. A pool that's "fine when I test it" but runs below the minimum for 18 hours a day can develop a bloom in days.
The most common triggers for dips: a heavy weekend of swimming (bather load depletes FC), a hot week with strong UV (accelerates FC consumption), a few days without adding chlorine, or running low on supply.
Cause 2: CYA is too high
CYA above 60–80 ppm traps chlorine
CYA stabilizes chlorine against UV degradation, but at high concentrations it also reduces the active fraction of chlorine available for sanitation. At CYA 80 ppm, the minimum FC to prevent algae is 6 ppm — and many pool owners maintaining "normal" FC of 2–3 ppm are chronically below that threshold without realizing it.
CYA rises over the season if you use trichlor tablets (each ppm of FC raised with trichlor adds about 0.6 ppm CYA) or dichlor granules. By mid-summer, a pool started at CYA 40 ppm in May might be at CYA 90+ ppm in August — and every chlorine dose now works at a fraction of its apparent effectiveness.
Cause 3: Treatment was stopped too early
Algae survived at low concentration and regrew
A pool that looks clear after shocking isn't necessarily algae-free. Algae can be reduced to a concentration too low to be visible while still alive. Once FC returns to maintenance levels, the surviving cells multiply and the bloom returns — often appearing as green or hazy water within 3–7 days of the "successful" treatment.
This is the reason the overnight chlorine loss test (OCLT) exists. Living algae in the water consumes FC measurably overnight even at low concentrations. A passing OCLT (FC drops 1 ppm or less from dusk to dawn with the pump off) is reliable confirmation that the algae is actually gone. Stopping when the water "looks clear" without running the OCLT is stopping early.
Cause 4: Algae survived on equipment, toys, or swimsuits
Spores reenter the pool after treatment
This cause specifically applies to mustard algae, which survives on fabric and equipment surfaces. The pool clears perfectly after treatment, and then the first swim in an unwashed suit reintroduces the spores. The algae re-establishes within days in the same shaded spots it occupied before.
Pool toys, floats, kick boards, vacuum heads, and brush heads can also carry spores between treatments. If mustard algae has appeared in your pool twice, and you didn't wash your swimsuits after the first incident, this is almost certainly the cause of the return.
Cause 5: Dead spots from poor circulation
Algae establishes in areas the pump doesn't reach
Pool circulation is rarely uniform. Corners behind steps, the middle of the deep end floor, and areas far from return jets can have significantly lower FC and chlorine contact than the rest of the pool. Algae establishes in these pockets first and spreads outward. If algae always appears in the same corner or area of your pool, poor circulation is likely a contributing factor.
Indicators of a dead-spot problem: algae consistently starts in one location, brushing that area reveals heavier algae growth than elsewhere, and the area feels slimy or has a different texture.
How to diagnose which cause you have
Run through this diagnostic in order:

Why tracking readings finds the pattern
The most powerful diagnostic tool for recurring algae is a log of your readings over time. With a record of FC, CYA, and the dates of each test, you can answer questions that are impossible to answer from memory:
- How low does FC actually get between tests? (Is it regularly dipping below the minimum?)
- Has CYA been rising every month? (Steady creep from tablet use)
- How many days after a shock treatment did FC return to maintenance level vs. when algae appeared?
- Did the last treatment actually pass the OCLT?
Without a reading history, each algae bloom looks like a fresh problem. With a history, you can see that FC has been hitting 1.5 ppm every weekend for six weeks and algae blooms on Tuesday. That's not a mystery; it's a predictable pattern with a fixable cause.
The one-time fix checklist
If algae has been a recurring problem this season, work through this list once and it should stop:
- Test CYA. If above 60–70 ppm, do a partial drain now. Don't skip this step — no maintenance routine compensates for CYA above 80.
- Shock the pool and run the OCLT. Treat current algae completely before fixing the prevention side.
- Identify your true FC minimum from the FC/CYA chart and set it as your target floor, not your generic dosing number.
- Switch to liquid chlorine if you currently use tablets as your primary sanitizer, so CYA stays stable going forward.
- Test FC 3× per week minimum and add chlorine proactively before FC approaches the minimum.
- Brush weekly — especially shaded areas, corners, and the waterline where algae first colonizes.
