Pool chlorine too high: what to do
High free chlorine (FC) after a shock treatment is expected and normal — you need to wait for it to drop before swimming, not panic and add chemicals. But if FC is genuinely too high (well above the normal target for your CYA level), or if it's high for reasons unrelated to shocking, here's how to diagnose the cause and bring it down safely.
What "too high" actually means
"Too high" is relative to your CYA level. A pool with CYA 80 has a normal target of 7–9 ppm and a shock target of 32 ppm. A pool with CYA 30 has a normal target of 3–5 ppm and a shock target of 12 ppm. The same FC reading is completely different in context.

Just finished shocking? Wait and test
If FC is high because you just shocked, that's intentional. Leave the cover off, keep the pump running, and let the sun and time do the work. Test every few hours. Common causes of genuinely high FC
- Over-shocking. Adding significantly more chlorine than the shock target (CYA × 40%) — usually from not calculating the dose or misjudging pool volume
- Trichlor tablet overcorrection. Adding extra tablets during a period of low demand, then finding FC has climbed because the pool wasn't consuming chlorine as fast as expected
- Miscalculated pool volume. Adding a dose based on an overestimated pool size results in a higher FC than intended
- Simultaneous shock from multiple sources. Adding both tablets and liquid chlorine or cal-hypo at the same time, stacking doses
- Saltwater (SWG) pools generating at high settings. Running the cell at 100% during a cool, overcast week with low demand can cause FC to climb above target
What high chlorine does (and doesn't do)
FC well above the swimming target:
- Causes eye and skin irritation when swimming — burning or redness that fades after leaving the water
- Bleaches swimwear, especially dark colors, with repeated exposure at high levels
- Can bleach or lighten hair, particularly colored or lightened hair
- Fades vinyl liners and covers with chronic over-chlorination (occasional high FC from shock treatments is not a concern)
At the FC levels seen in typical shock treatments (up to CYA × 40%), the risks to pool equipment are minimal. Chlorine at these concentrations is not going to corrode metal equipment or damage pool surfaces with short-duration exposure. The main concern is swimmer comfort and sensitive materials.
How to lower pool chlorine
Option 1: Sunlight and time (best choice)
UV light degrades chlorine. Even with CYA protecting it, FC drops measurably in sunlight. Leave the pool cover off, run the pump, and wait. On a sunny day this is the safest and most controlled option — FC will drop to normal levels on its own schedule. Test before swimming.
Option 2: Dilution
Adding fresh water lowers FC proportionally to the fraction of water replaced. Drain 10% of the pool's water and refill: FC drops by ~10%. This also affects CYA, calcium hardness, and other parameters, so use it selectively. It's most useful when the pool is also oversaturated with other chemicals.
Option 3: Sodium thiosulfate (chlorine neutralizer)
Sodium thiosulfate reacts with chlorine almost instantly, dropping FC within minutes. Use it only when you genuinely cannot wait — an event you can't reschedule with a fixed deadline. Cautions:
- Dose extremely carefully. It's very easy to overshoot and destroy all FC in the pool, leaving it unprotected
- Add small amounts and test between doses. Don't add a full dose at once
- It also affects pH and may temporarily drop dissolved oxygen. Retest all parameters after use
- Don't use it to short-circuit an active shock treatment. If the pool isn't done, you're just creating the problem you were trying to solve
Don't neutralize an active shock treatment
If you're still in the middle of shocking — CC is above 0.5 ppm, the pool hasn't passed the overnight test — lowering FC artificially just means you'll have to re-shock. The chlorine that feels "too high" right now is working. Give it time.
Prevention: dose accurately before adding chlorine
The most common cause of genuinely excessive FC is adding chlorine without calculating the dose. Prevention is simple:
- Know your pool volume. Measure it once correctly — length × width × average depth × 7.48 for rectangular pools, adjusting for irregular shapes
