Why the shock level depends on CYA

CYA (cyanuric acid) stabilizes chlorine against UV degradation — but it also reduces chlorine's ability to oxidize contaminants and kill pathogens. As CYA rises, you need a higher FC to get the same sanitation effect. The shock level (also called the breakpoint chlorination level) scales with CYA to account for this.

The formula is straightforward: Shock target FC = CYA × 40%. A pool with CYA 50 ppm needs FC at 20 ppm to shock. A pool with CYA 80 ppm needs FC at 32 ppm. Using a fixed shock target like "10 ppm" or "one bag of shock" ignores your CYA entirely — which is why many shocks fail.

Getting to shock target is only the first step

After adding chlorine, you need to hold FC at or above the shock target — continuously — until combined chlorine (CC) drops to 0.5 ppm or less and the water clears. If FC falls below the shock target before CC reaches zero, you may need to add more chlorine and start the clock again. Test every few hours. Run the pump 24/7. Brush the walls daily.

When to shock your pool

  • CC above 0.5 ppm — the clearest sign that chloramines are present and need to be oxidized out
  • Green or cloudy water — algae bloom requiring oxidation
  • After heavy use — high bather load introduces organic contaminants
  • After a storm — rain introduces organics and dilutes chlorine
  • Pool has been idle — FC may have drifted low long enough for algae to take hold

Shock at dusk or night

UV from sunlight destroys unprotected chlorine quickly. Even with CYA, high FC levels are vulnerable to UV degradation. Add chlorine in the evening so it has the full night to work before sunlight can degrade it.

Why liquid chlorine for shocking

Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) is the best choice for shocking because it adds no calcium, no cyanurate, and no stabilizer — just chlorine. Cal-hypo works if your calcium hardness is low, but it raises calcium with every dose. Trichlor is not suitable for shocking: each dose adds CYA at the same time you're trying to raise FC, and you'd need an impractical amount to reach shock levels.

Worked example

A 15,000-gallon pool tests at CYA 50 ppm and current FC 3 ppm. Shock target = 50 × 40% = 20 ppm FC. You need to raise FC by 17 ppm.

Using 12.5% liquid chlorine: 17 × 15,000 × 3.785 ÷ 1,000 = 965 g needed. Divided by (1.094 density × 29.57 mL/fl oz × 0.125 concentration) = about 238 fl oz (7.4 quarts). Add at dusk near a return jet, run the pump continuously, and retest every 4–6 hours. Add more chlorine each time FC drops below 20 ppm — hold it there until CC is below 0.5 ppm and the water clears.

How much shock does a pool need?

The amount depends on your CYA level — not a fixed bag size or "1 pound per 10,000 gallons." Shock target FC = CYA × 40%. At CYA 30, that's 12 ppm. At CYA 50, it's 20 ppm. At CYA 80, it's 32 ppm. The calculator above converts your CYA-based target into exact ounces for your pool size and chlorine product.

Why does CYA affect how much shock I need?

CYA binds to chlorine molecules, reducing the fraction that's active (hypochlorous acid). At higher CYA, you need more total FC to maintain enough active chlorine to break through chloramines and kill algae. A standard "one-bag" shock at CYA 80 may only reach 8–10 ppm — far short of the 32 ppm required.

How do I know if the shock worked?

Test FC every 4–6 hours during the shock. If FC holds at or above the target and combined chlorine (CC) is dropping toward 0.5 ppm, it's working. If FC drops back toward zero, re-dose — chlorine is being consumed faster than you're adding it. The process is complete when CC is 0.5 ppm or less and the water is clear.

When can I swim after shocking?

Wait until FC drops below 10 ppm — typically 12–24 hours after the final dose with the pump running continuously. Don't go by the clock; test FC before anyone gets in. A pool with FC 10+ ppm will irritate eyes and skin regardless of how long ago you shocked.

Can I use granular shock (cal-hypo) instead of liquid chlorine?

Yes — cal-hypo 65% works well if your calcium hardness is below 350 ppm. The calculator supports it. The downside: cal-hypo adds calcium with every dose, which can cause temporary white cloudiness if hardness is already elevated. Liquid chlorine is simpler — it adds nothing except chlorine.

How much shock for a 1,000-gallon pool?

At CYA 40 ppm (the most common level), the shock target is 16 ppm FC. Starting from near-zero FC, a 1,000-gallon pool needs roughly 19 fl oz of 10% liquid chlorine (about 15 fl oz of 12.5%). A 5,000-gallon pool at the same CYA needs about 95 fl oz (3 quarts); a 10,000-gallon pool about 190 fl oz (1.5 gallons); a 15,000-gallon pool about 285 fl oz (just over 2 gallons).
