What chemicals do you need to open a pool?

Opening a pool requires five categories of chemicals — some mandatory, some conditional on your current water readings and pool condition:

  1. Pool shock — raise FC to shock level (CYA × 40%) to kill bacteria and oxidize any organic matter that accumulated over winter. For a green pool, use three times the standard dose.
  2. pH adjustment — muriatic acid if pH is above 7.8, soda ash if below 7.2. Correct pH before shocking — chlorine is significantly less effective at high or low pH.
  3. Alkalinity adjustment — baking soda if TA is below 60 ppm. Low alkalinity causes wild pH swings with every chemical addition.
  4. Calcium hardness — calcium chloride if CH is below the minimum for your surface type. Low CH is corrosive to plaster and can cause pitting over time.
  5. Stabilizer (CYA) — if CYA is below 30 ppm, add granular cyanuric acid before shocking. Without stabilizer, sunlight destroys chlorine within hours and your shock dose is wasted.

Test before you treat, when possible

If you can test the water before buying chemicals, your doses will be exact. If you’re making a pre-opening shopping run, the calculator above gives reasonable estimates based on pool size and condition — bring your readings to refine the plan once the pool is open.

Pool opening chemical addition order

  1. CYA in a sock (if CYA is below 30 ppm) — place a fine mesh sock filled with granular stabilizer in front of a return jet and run the pump for 24–48 hours before shocking. Chlorine added before CYA dissolves will burn off in hours without accomplishing anything.
  2. Baking soda (if TA is low) — broadcast across the surface, wait 30 minutes.
  3. Muriatic acid or soda ash (if pH is out of range) — adjust pH, retest after 30 minutes. Correct pH before shocking — shock at the wrong pH is inefficient.
  4. Calcium chloride (if CH is low) — pre-dissolve in a bucket (water first, then the calcium chloride — the reaction is exothermic). Add slowly to the pool with the pump running.
  5. Pool shock — add at dusk, near return jets, with the pump running overnight. Do not pour directly into the skimmer.
  6. Algaecide — add 24–48 hours after shocking, once FC has dropped below 5 ppm. High chlorine degrades algaecide rapidly, so timing matters.

Opening a green pool

A green pool requires a different approach than a clear or lightly cloudy pool. The green color indicates active algae — and algae demands significantly more chlorine than clean water.

  1. Brush first. Before adding any chemicals, brush the walls, steps, and floor thoroughly with a pool brush. Algae grows in a biofilm that protects it from chlorine. Brushing disrupts the biofilm and makes the shock significantly more effective.
  2. Triple shock dose. For a green pool, use three times the standard shock level (CYA × 40% × 3, minimum 30 ppm FC). Add at dusk with the pump running continuously.
  3. Run the pump continuously. During algae treatment, keep the pump running around the clock — not just during normal filter cycles.
  4. Test and repeat. Check FC every morning. If FC drops below 5 ppm overnight, the algae is still consuming chlorine — add another full shock dose. Two to three consecutive days of shocking is normal for severe algae.
  5. Confirm with an OCLT. Once you think the algae is gone, run an overnight chlorine loss test: measure FC at dusk and again at dawn (before any sunlight). If FC drops less than 1 ppm, the algae demand is gone and it’s safe to add algaecide and resume normal maintenance.

Don’t add algaecide during an active algae treatment

Algaecide requires a normal chlorine level to work — it is an inhibitor, not a killer. Adding it while FC is at shock level wastes the product. Wait until the algae is gone (OCLT pass), FC has dropped to normal range, and then add algaecide as a preventive measure.

Why CYA matters at opening

Cyanuric acid (CYA, or stabilizer) protects chlorine from UV degradation. Without it, sunlight can destroy 75–90% of your pool’s chlorine in just a few hours. At opening, especially after a partial drain or dilution over winter, CYA may be lower than expected.

If CYA is below 20 ppm and you shock the pool without adding stabilizer first, the shock dose can disappear before it has done its job. Add CYA in a sock in front of a return jet, run the pump for 24–48 hours to fully dissolve it, and then shock. The wait is worth it.

CYA also sets your ongoing chlorine target for the season. At CYA 40 ppm, your minimum FC is around 3 ppm. At CYA 70 ppm (SWG), it’s around 3.5 ppm. Setting CYA correctly at opening means your chlorine will work effectively all season.

Frequently asked questions

How much shock do I need to open a clear pool?

For a pool that was covered and stayed clear over winter, the standard opening shock is CYA × 40%, minimum 10 ppm FC. Subtract your current FC from that target. For a pool with CYA 40 ppm and FC 0, you need 16 ppm of FC — about 2 lbs of 65% cal-hypo per 10,000 gallons. The calculator above computes this based on your actual pool volume.

Do I need to balance the water before I shock at opening?

Yes — adjust pH, alkalinity, and calcium before adding shock. Chlorine is far less effective at high pH. At pH 8.0, roughly 20% of your free chlorine is in the active (hypochlorous acid) form; at pH 7.5, it’s closer to 50%. Adding shock to unbalanced water wastes a significant portion of the dose.

How long after opening chemicals can I swim?

After a standard shock, wait until FC drops back to the normal range for your CYA level — typically 12–24 hours with the pump running. For a green pool treatment with a triple shock dose, it may take 2–4 days before FC drops to a safe level. Never swim when FC is above 10 ppm.

What is a metal sequestrant and do I need it at opening?

Metal sequestrant binds iron, copper, and manganese in the water, preventing them from oxidizing and staining the pool surface when you add chlorine. If your fill water is high in metals, or if you have noticed staining on your pool surfaces in past seasons, add metal sequestrant before shocking. Apply it to the whole pool with the pump running, then wait 24 hours before adding shock.

Does CYA carry over from last season?

Yes — CYA does not degrade over winter. Whatever level you closed with is essentially what you open with, adjusted only for any dilution from rain or fill water added over winter. If you topped up the pool with water that contains no CYA (most tap water has zero), your CYA will have dropped proportionally. Enter your measured CYA above for an exact stabilizer dose.
