Pool Cloudy After Adding Chemicals?

Brief cloudiness after adding pool chemicals is usually normal and clears within 30 minutes to a few hours. Granular stabilizer (CYA), calcium chloride, and soda ash all create a temporary white haze as they dissolve — this is chemistry working as expected. Cloudiness lasting more than 24 hours after any chemical addition is a sign something is out of balance, usually involving pH and calcium carbonate precipitation. Chemical by chemical

CYA stabilizer (granular)

Granular cyanuric acid dissolves much more slowly than other pool chemicals. When you add it, the granules create a visible white cloud as they slowly dissolve and disperse — this is completely normal and not a sign of any problem. The cloudiness should clear within 30–60 minutes as the pump circulates the water.

Tip: Add CYA granules directly to the skimmer with the pump running, or pre-dissolve in a bucket of warm water first. Never broadcast CYA granules across the pool surface — they can settle on the pool floor and bleach vinyl liners or spot-stain plaster before fully dissolving.

Calcium chloride (raises calcium hardness)

Calcium chloride dissolves quickly and releases heat as it does, creating a temporary milky white haze for 15–30 minutes. This is a normal exothermic reaction and nothing to be concerned about. The cloudiness should fully clear within an hour or two.

If cloudiness persists past a few hours, the water may be approaching calcium saturation — meaning it cannot hold more dissolved calcium, and the added calcium precipitated instead of dissolving. Check calcium hardness. If CH is above 350–400 ppm with elevated pH, the water is likely oversaturated. Running the filter will help, but a partial drain may be needed if CH is significantly above range.

Pre-dissolve calcium chloride

Always pre-dissolve calcium chloride in a bucket of pool water before adding it to the pool. This distributes the heat release safely and prevents localized high-calcium areas near the return jets. Add it slowly around the pool perimeter with the pump running — never dump it into the skimmer.

Soda ash (raises pH)

Soda ash (sodium carbonate) raises pH rapidly. A brief white cloud at the point where you pour it in is normal and clears in minutes. However, soda ash can cause persistent cloudiness if:

  • You overdosed — pH jumped significantly above 7.8, which causes calcium carbonate to precipitate in pools with moderate to high calcium hardness.
  • Calcium hardness is already elevated — even a properly sized dose can temporarily push the water into a supersaturated state if CH is above 300 ppm and pH was already on the high side.

Baking soda (raises total alkalinity)

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) creates minimal cloudiness on its own. However, raising total alkalinity drives pH upward — and elevated pH in a pool with high calcium hardness can cause calcium carbonate to precipitate. In pools with both high TA and high CH, a baking soda overdose can cause the same calcium-precipitation cloudiness as soda ash.

Add baking soda in increments no larger than 0.5 lbs per 10,000 gallons, wait 4–6 hours, and retest before adding more. If the water clouded after a baking soda addition, check TA and pH before adding anything else.

Muriatic acid (lowers pH and alkalinity)

Muriatic acid should not cause cloudiness. If the pool clouds after an acid addition, it is almost certainly a coincidence — test FC, pH, and turbidity to find the actual cause. One rare exception: in pools with very high calcium hardness that is at or near calcium saturation, a large rapid pH drop can destabilize the water balance enough to cause brief calcium precipitation, but this is uncommon in properly maintained pools.

Pool clarifier

Clarifiers work by causing fine suspended particles to clump together into larger aggregates that the filter can catch more efficiently. During this aggregation process — typically the first 12–24 hours — the water can appear slightly more turbid as particles cluster before being removed. This is the clarifier doing its job.

Run the filter continuously while clarifier is working and clean it every 8–12 hours. If the cloudiness is markedly worse after 24 hours of continuous filtration, check whether the filter media needs cleaning — a clogged filter cannot remove the clumped particles, and the clarifier's job never completes.

Algaecide

Copper-based algaecides do not cause cloudiness (though copper buildup at very high concentrations can tint water blue-green over time). Quaternary ammonium (quat-based) algaecides can create brief surface foaming — this is from the surfactant properties of the chemical and is not cloudiness. Foam that dissipates within 30 minutes is normal; foam that persists suggests the product was overdosed or added to a pool with organic buildup that reacts with the surfactant.

The rule: wait and run the filter before adding more

The most common mistake after seeing cloudiness following a chemical addition is immediately reaching for more chemicals. This almost always makes things worse. The correct sequence:

  1. Wait. Give the chemical time to dissolve and the pump time to circulate. Most chemical-related cloudiness resolves in under 2 hours.
  2. If it persists past 2 hours, test — at minimum, test pH and calcium hardness. Do not guess or add more chemicals without knowing where the readings landed.
  3. Correct based on test results. Usually this means bringing pH back to the 7.4–7.6 range using muriatic acid in small increments.
  4. Run the filter continuously until the water clears — clean or backwash every 8–12 hours.

Cloudiness that won't clear — it's not just undissolved chemical

Cloudiness that persists past 24 hours after any chemical addition is not residual undissolved chemical. It is a suspended solid — almost always calcium carbonate precipitate from pH and calcium imbalance. The water needs pH correction, not more time. Test and correct the chemistry; the filter will then clear the precipitate.
