Pool Cloudy but Chemistry Is Fine? Check the Filter

Why filtration is required even with perfect chemistry
Pool water contains microscopic suspended particles — dead algae cells, dust, skin cells, sunscreen residue, and calcium carbonate — that balanced chemistry alone cannot remove. These particles are small enough to stay suspended indefinitely without filtration. A sand filter captures particles down to about 20–40 microns; a cartridge filter can reach 10–15 microns; DE (diatomaceous earth) filters can remove particles as small as 3–5 microns. Without continuous filtration, even chemically balanced water stays hazy or dull.
The rule: chemistry controls what is in the water chemically. Filtration determines what is in the water physically. Both have to work.

The four filtration problems and how to fix them
1. Not running the pump long enough
Most residential pools require at least one full water turnover per day to maintain clarity, which typically means 8–12 hours of run time depending on pool size and pump flow rate. Running the pump 4–6 hours is common, but it is often not enough — especially during high-use days, hot weather, or following any event that increases turbidity.
Quick check: Divide your pool volume (gallons) by your pump's flow rate (gallons per minute) to get your turnover time in minutes. If you are running the pump less than one full turnover, extend the schedule and recheck clarity in 24 hours before making any other changes.
When to run the pump longer
Run 24 hours continuously any time you are: actively clearing cloudy water, recovering from algae, shocking the pool, or the day after a heavy bather load or storm. Once clear, most pools maintain clarity with 8–10 hours per day on a timer.
2. Dirty or clogged filter
A filter that is loaded with trapped particles can no longer capture new ones efficiently. The water passes through but the filter cannot do its job. For sand and DE filters, the pressure gauge tells the story — pressure rising 8–10 psi above the clean baseline means backwash is needed. For cartridge filters, pressure rise indicates the cartridge needs rinsing or soaking.
Fix by filter type:
- Sand filter: Backwash until the sight glass runs clear (typically 2–3 minutes). Then switch to Rinse for 30 seconds before returning to Filter mode. If pressure does not drop notably after backwashing, channeling may be the issue (see below).
- Cartridge filter: Remove the cartridge and rinse with a garden hose using a straight-stream nozzle, working from top to bottom between each pleat. Stubborn buildup of calcium or oils requires an overnight soak in a dedicated filter cleaning solution. Do not use a pressure washer — it damages the filter media.
- DE filter: Backwash to remove spent DE and debris, then recharge with fresh DE powder (follow the manufacturer's specified amount for your filter size). The diatomaceous earth is the actual filter media in these systems; without recharging, the filter loses most of its particle-catching ability.
3. Worn-out or spent filter media
Filter media does not last indefinitely. Sand becomes smooth and rounded over time, losing its ability to trap particles effectively. Cartridge filter pleats become brittle, collapse, or accumulate mineral deposits that cannot be cleaned off. Each type has a practical service life:

4. Channeling in sand filters
Channeling is when sand packs down or clumps together, and water cuts preferential paths through the bed rather than flowing evenly through the media. Water gets through but particles are not filtered. The giveaway: pressure barely drops during backwashing, and the pool stays cloudy even with good chemistry and long run times.
Fix: A dedicated sand filter cleaner product (added through the skimmer and left to soak overnight before backwashing) can break up oil and chemical buildup that causes channeling. Adding clarifier to help
A pool clarifier causes fine suspended particles to clump together into larger aggregates that the filter can catch more efficiently. It is a useful tool when the filter is working correctly but struggling with very fine particles. However, clarifier is not a fix for a dirty or worn-out filter — if the filter cannot catch normal-sized particles, adding clarifier just creates larger particles the filter also cannot catch.
Use clarifier after cleaning the filter, confirm the filter is running at normal pressure, then add clarifier per label instructions. Most clarifiers require continuous filtration for 24–48 hours to work.
Flocculant vs. clarifier
A flocculant (pool floc) works differently — it causes particles to clump into large masses that sink to the pool floor, where you vacuum them to waste rather than through the filter. When to call a professional
Some filter problems require parts or diagnosis beyond routine maintenance:
- Sand in pool from return jets — indicates broken laterals inside the filter. The lateral assembly needs replacement; this is a DIY job if you are comfortable, but requires opening the filter and replacing internal parts.
- DE powder in pool returns — indicates a torn or cracked grid inside the DE filter. The grid assembly requires replacement.
- Filter housing cracked or leaking — requires professional assessment; running a pool with a compromised filter housing can cause pump damage.
- Pump not reaching normal pressure — if pressure is consistently lower than baseline, the pump may be losing prime, have a blocked impeller, or have an air leak on the suction side. These are pump issues, not filter issues.
