Pool Cloudy After Rain? Here's the Fix
A pool turns cloudy after rain because rain dilutes free chlorine — the most common and immediate cause — while also washing algae spores, phosphates, and organic debris into the water. Even an inch of rain can drop FC by 1–3 ppm in a typical residential pool, leaving too little sanitizer to keep the water clear. Why rain causes cloudy pool water
Rain affects pool chemistry through four separate mechanisms, and they often compound each other:
- Free chlorine dilution. Rain is essentially chlorine-free water dumped directly into your pool. A typical 20,000-gallon pool receiving one inch of rain gains roughly 500–700 gallons of untreated water — enough to measurably dilute FC, pH, alkalinity, and CYA all at once.
- Runoff brings organics. Rainwater flowing across decking, landscaping, and surrounding soil picks up algae spores, phosphates from decomposing plant material, bird droppings, dirt, and airborne pollutants. These all enter the pool as organic load that consumes chlorine and feeds algae growth.
- pH shift. Rainwater is slightly acidic — typically pH 5.0–5.6 in most regions. Heavy rainfall can nudge pool pH downward, particularly in pools with lower total alkalinity. Low pH alone does not cause cloudiness, but it reduces the chlorine effectiveness window and makes it harder for FC to stay effective.
- Cumulative dilution. Multi-day rain events have an additive effect. Each day's rain adds more volume while chlorine continues to degrade from sunlight and demand. By day two or three, FC can drop to near zero even if it was well-stocked before the weather moved in.
The cloudiness itself is usually algae at an early bloom stage, not from the water chemistry directly. FC depletion gives algae the opening it needs; the phosphates and spores from runoff provide the seed and food.
Heavy rain vs. light rain
A light sprinkle (under 0.25 inches) has a negligible effect on most pools. A moderate to heavy storm (0.5 inches or more) can meaningfully dilute FC and warrants testing. Several consecutive rainy days — even if each day's total is modest — have a cumulative effect that can deplete FC as effectively as a single heavy storm.
What to test after rain
Test within a few hours of a significant rain event — not the next morning. The earlier you catch a depleted FC, the less time algae has to establish itself.

Priority order: FC first. If FC is fine and the water is already cloudy, the cloudiness is more likely from suspended debris than from algae — run the filter and it should clear on its own within 12–24 hours.
How to fix a cloudy pool after rain
Step 1 — Test immediately. Use a reliable test kit to check FC and pH. If you do not have a kit handy, take a water sample to a pool store, but know that any delay gives algae more time to establish.
Step 2 — Restore FC. If FC is below your minimum (based on your CYA level), add liquid chlorine or another chlorine source to bring it to at least the target range. If the water already has a greenish tint or has been low for more than 24 hours, shock to the CYA-based shock level (CYA × 40%) rather than just the daily target.
Step 3 — Correct pH if needed. Bring pH to the 7.4–7.6 range. If you are going to shock, lower pH to 7.2 first — this maximizes chlorine effectiveness during the shock process.
Step 4 — Remove debris. Skim leaves, insects, and organic material off the surface and from the skimmer basket. Organic debris consumes chlorine and contributes phosphates as it breaks down.
Step 5 — Run the filter continuously. Keep the pump running 24 hours until the water clears. Clean or backwash every 8–12 hours. If the cloudiness persists beyond 48 hours after FC is restored, a clarifier can help the filter catch the fine suspended particles.
Preventing cloudiness after rain
The best insurance against post-rain cloudiness is a FC level that is already at the high end of your target range before the storm arrives. A pool sitting at minimum FC has no buffer — any dilution pushes it into the danger zone immediately.
- Check the forecast. If heavy rain is coming, add a chlorine top-up the evening before to keep FC near the top of your target range.
- Shock preemptively if FC is already low and a storm is approaching. It is far easier to maintain a clear pool than to clear a cloudy or green one.
- Use a pool cover during extended periods of rain. A cover blocks runoff, prevents debris entry, and reduces dilution — all three causes addressed at once.
