How much chlorine does a pool use per week?
There is no single answer — it depends on three things: pool size (gallons), chlorine demand (how fast FC drops), and the strength of the product you’re using. A 10,000-gallon pool with low demand uses roughly 0.2–0.3 gallons of liquid chlorine per week. A 20,000-gallon pool with heavy use in summer heat can easily use 2–3 gallons per week.
The most common mistake is buying based on habit rather than measurement. If you consistently over-dose, you’re spending money on chlorine that burns off unused. If you under-dose, the pool slides into algae territory. The calculator above gives you a number calibrated to your actual pool.
Demand, not pool size, drives your chlorine budget
Two identical 15,000-gallon pools can have very different chlorine needs. A covered pool in a cool climate with light use might need 0.3 gallons per week. An uncovered pool in Arizona with daily swimmer use might need 1.5 gallons for the same volume. Demand is what matters — size just converts it to a shopping quantity.

How to measure your pool’s actual chlorine demand
The most accurate way to know your demand is to measure it directly. The process is simple:
- Test FC in the evening after the pool has been in the shade for at least an hour. Record the reading.
- Do not add any chlorine.
- Test FC again the next morning before sunlight hits the pool. Record the reading.
- Calculate demand: (Evening FC − Morning FC) ÷ hours × 24 = ppm per day.
This overnight test captures natural chlorine consumption without UV interference. Run it two or three times to get a stable average — demand varies day to day based on temperature, swimmer load, and organic material in the water. What drives high chlorine demand?
- Swimmer load — body oils, sweat, sunscreen, and urine are all chlorine-consuming compounds. A pool used heavily every day can have 3–5× the demand of a lightly-used pool of the same size.
- Sunlight — UV light destroys chlorine that isn’t protected by CYA (stabilizer). A pool with CYA below 20 ppm can lose most of its FC to UV in a few hours of direct sun. Bringing CYA to 30–50 ppm typically reduces demand by 30–50%.
- Organic debris — leaves, grass, pollen, and algae all consume chlorine. A pool that gets heavy debris can see demand spike after every windstorm. Regular skimming and vacuuming reduces this load.
- Water temperature — warm water accelerates all chemical reactions, including chlorine demand. Pools above 85°F often see meaningfully higher FC consumption.
- Early-stage algae — algae consuming FC often shows up as elevated demand before any green is visible. An overnight chlorine loss test (OCLT) can confirm whether algae is driving high demand before the problem becomes visible.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I’m using the right amount of chlorine?
Test your free chlorine 2–3 times per week. If FC is consistently dropping below the minimum for your CYA level (CYA × 7.5% for a standard pool), you’re under-dosing. If FC is persistently above the maximum, you’re over-dosing. Aim for small, frequent additions that keep FC in the middle of the target range rather than large doses that create wide swings.
Does 12.5% liquid chlorine go further than 10%?
Yes — 12.5% contains 25% more available chlorine per gallon, so you need 20% less volume for the same effect. Can I reduce how much chlorine I use?
Yes.
